Sachin Ghimire is a Medical Anthropologist and a filmmaker from Nepal. He has been involved continuously in academic activities all through his life. He is an ardent learner and has a profound interest in deeply analysing the social fabric of society. He did his MA in anthropology (2004-06) from Purvanchal University, Nepal and worked on the thesis, ‘‘An Indigenous Technology on the Verge of Extinction.’’ After that, he enrolled for an M.Phil. in 2007 at Centre for Social Medicine and Community Health, Jawaharlal Nehru University, India. He was awarded the degree on the dissertation ‘‘Conflict and health: An exploratory study during conflict and post-conflict period in Rolpa district , Nepal’’ which was followed by his enrollment to the doctoral studies (2010-15) for which he submitted a research thesis entitled – ‘‘Power, People and politics: An ethnographic study of health crisis in Rolpa district of Nepal.’’ He is an international member of the American Anthropological Association and the Society for Medical Anthropology and Founder Editor of New Angle: Nepal Journal of Social Science and Public Policy.
He has presented papers at various national and international conferences. To name a few, “Medical encounter in Rolpa, A mission against state patronized corruption” at 14th World Congress of Bioethics, St. John Academy of health science, India. ‘‘Medical encounter in Rolpa: A fight against state patronized corruption, Setting agenda of Medical anthropology in 21st century’’ organized by American Anthropological Association, Universitat Rovira I Virgili, Spain, ‘‘An Interconnection of Conflict, health and Health service System in Rolpa District of Nepal, Practical and Presentation session.’’ at the Netherland Institute of Health Sciences, Erasmus University. He also has a host of publications ranging from topics like conflict, women discrimination, health etc., which includes articles like ‘‘An interconnection of conflict and health in Rolpa,” published as original research in the special issue of Social medicine in both English and Spanish version, ‘‘HIV and AIDS in daily broadsheet of Nepal”; a critical outlook in Media Journal, Martin Chautari. His published reports primarily looks for women and health issues; “Violence against Women: An intersection of HIV, Gender and Health,” published by Conscious Media Forum in collaboration with Action Aid Nepal, “Peer Ethnographic Study on Menstrual Health and Hygiene Management in Nepal,” Population Service International, published by Research gate.
He worked as a Co-Investigator at Population Service International / Mother and Infant Research Activities ( MIRA), Program Coordinator at Nepal health Sector Support plan / Janaheet Gramin Sewa Samiti and as a Research Associate with some of the renowned international researchers.
Apart from his core academic research, he has been involved in the world of making films by directing, producing and writing the script. He has been making movies over the years both documentary and short films primarily on social issues. Many of his movies have claimed critical acclaim most notably ‘‘Punte Ko Pangro’’ released in 2013 was officially selected in more than 20 international film festivals around the world and “Diyalee” in more than six international festivals.
He is one of the resourceful intellectual to feature as an expert for the Policy Change Initiative. His vast range and dimensions of experience at both theoretical and practical levels would help the organisation flourish by inculcating his expertise and ideas. His qualities and insights are sure to be of utmost use to PCI.
